Canadian Appointed to International Festival & Events Association Board
Guy Laflamme, Senior Vice-President, Capital Experience, Communications and Marketing for the National Capital Commission, has been appointed to the Board of Directors for the International Festivals & Events Association (IFEA). With this prestigious appointment, Mr. Laflamme becomes the only Canadian representative on the IFEA Board.
Mr. Laflamme has had a distinguished career spanning over two decades with the NCC, where he continues to be responsible for the planning and implementation of national events such as Canada Day and Winterlude, as well as commemorations, interpretation, and public art in the Capital. The International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) is the premiere association supporting and enabling festival and event professionals worldwide. The organization officially represents industry-leading members in 40 countries on five continents.
While Mr. Laflamme's well-deserved appointment brings a much-needed Canadian perspective to the IFEA, it might also serve as an opportunity for our industry to glean better insight into how festivals and events fit into other countries' respective national tourism strategies.
TIAC has long recognized the important role that major events and festivals play, highlighting them as part of the Product plank of our MAP strategy. Events and festivals are key drivers of visitation that create urgencies for international visitors to come to Canada.
TIAC wishes Mr. Laflamme the best and looks forward to working with him in the future.

Tourism Week in Canada: June 6-12, 2011
Tourism Week in Canada is the national celebration that highlights the economic impact and social benefits of Canada's tourism sector among the media, general public and governments at all levels. It provides a focal point for activities organized by the provincial and territorial tourism industry associations, provincial and territorial marketing organizations, destination marketing organizations, individual businesses and other partners.
Tourism Week provides a heightened opportunity to engage government officials on national tourism issues. TIAC encourages members to communicate with the public, contact government officials, and generate media stories focusing on the state of tourism locally, provincially/territorially or nationally, examining specific tourism subsectors, profiling individual tourism operators, or looking at how the industry has transformed the economy in your communities.
TIAC has prepared an information kit with some relevant materials, including:
- A tourism industry fact sheet;
- Key messages about the Canadian tourism industry;
- Guidance on how to write and submit a media release to your local media;
- Guidance on how to write and submit a Tourism Week Op-Ed for your community newspaper;
- A Tourism Week proclamation that you can bring to your municipal politicians to have Tourism Week officially proclaimed in your community.
